Biography - Tom McAtee

Over 30 years HR experience comprising both generalist Human Resource Management line roles and specialist corporate HR/OD/Learning consulting roles.

Worked both within Australia and overseas for some of the most successful companies in the world including Wesfarmers, Shell and BOC Gases.

Recognised as a strategic thinker who can see the business priorities and implement a broad range of performance and organisational improvement initiatives.

Facilitated leadership, executive development and business workshops in 17 different countries covering Asia/Pacific, Europe and the USA. 

Developed and project managed organisational change programs and methodologies involving national and international business improvement project teams.

Tertiary qualified, Chartered member of AHRI, Affiliate member of CIPD (UK).

I was recognised by my peers when asked to be on the National Judging Panel for the AHRI "Excellence in People Management" Awards (1999). I have also been recognised internationally (Corporate Leadership Council, Gold Book Chapter, 2004) for my work in global executive transition management.

I have helped take companies from nothing to something, and from something to something else.

Experience

Most of my work roles have been in heavy industrial/energy/resources organisations (Wesfarmers Resources, Shell, BOC Gases, ICI) either as:

• a line HR manager, where as a member of the business management team, I have been responsible for providing leadership and guidance in developing and driving HR policy, recommending people strategies and structures to optimise organization effectiveness, and setting standards for services delivered and monitoring performance against these standards, or
• a staff HR expert, where as part of a corporate team, I have worked with Clients (both internal & external) in identifying performance and organisational improvement opportunities and implementing appropriate interventions using my consulting skills, processes and products; within agreed time, cost and quality standards.

As a result of these work roles, I have gained experience in all aspects of Human Resources Management including:

• Delivered personal and leadership development programs in 17 different countries around the world, often where English was not the first language.
• Developed and delivered world’s best practice for global executive onboarding.
• Facilitated organisational change projects and global team meetings/strategy conferences in Asia and Europe.
• Developed and implemented major organisation restructuring at a leading Australian coal mine to build a more productive workplace (from 8800 tonnes pa to 20500 tonnes pa) without industrial action.
• Negotiated 4 major Collective Enterprise Agreements in the coal mining industry without industrial action.
• Managed complex industrial relations issues in highly unionised workplaces such as the Australian coal industry and heavy manufacturing without significant loss of workdays.
• Developed and implemented leading-edge professional practices (some web-based) covering a range of topics including:
